August is here, the month that club championships are decided in our area.

Over the next several weeks, local golfers will be competing in stroke-play tournaments in an effort to claim their club’s championship trophy.

The following is a preview of upcoming club championship in the greater Altoona region:

Park Hills: One of the area’s oldest clubs will kick off the local club championship action this weekend, deciding its men’s and women’s titles over 36 holes of stroke play.

Last year’s winner on the men’s side was Artie Fink Jr., who held off Quintin Dziabo to win by three strokes. Fink finished with a two-day total of 138.

On the women’s side, 12-year-old Crosby Denis captured her second straight championship title with a score of 160. Cindy Trimarco finished second at 172.

Summit: Cresson’s Summit Country Club will also hold its championship tournament this weekend.

Dziabo will be competing as the men’s defending champion after a dominant performance last year. His scores of 68 and 75 were good enough for a 10-shot victory and his fifth club championship victory at Summit.

The women’s competition last year saw a strong performance by Therese Perino. Her scores of 87 on both Saturday and Sunday were good enough to clinch the women’s trophy.

Sinking Valley: The championship flight for the men’s tournament will begin this Saturday and concludes next weekend, along with all other flights.

Last year’s competition on the men’s side was a family affair as Andrew Ferguson edged out his father, Greg Ferguson, by a single shot after a four-day total of 295.

The women’s champion was perennial winner Suz Price, whose two-day total of 166 bested Cassidy Miksich by three shots.

Iron Masters: Similar to Sinking Valley, Iron Masters’ championship flight in the men’s division begins early. Two rounds will be played this weekend, with all golfers joining the competition next weekend for the final 36 holes.

Gwen Paden captured the women’s title last year with a 36-hole total of 164. The title increased Paden’s trophy count at Iron Masters to an amazing total 34.

The men’s championship was won by Spencer Hinish. His four-day total of 2-under par, 286, was seven shots better than second-place finisher Wes Elder.

Scotch Valley: The area’s final championship competition will be held at Scotch Valley Country Club, August 27-28.

Anthony DeGol will be looking for his fifth straight championship, after last year’s impressive 6-under-par total of 138. The women’s tournament last August also saw a familiar winner when Michelle Day scored yet another victory. Day’s two-day score of 154 was good enough to edge out Chris Sisto, who finished second.
